So it’s V-Day the best way to feel loved/lonely and a great day to listen to some tunes that reflect such emotions. Instead of engaging in a full on rant as to my feelings about the silly holiday I have constructed a playlist for the occasion. I will keep it limited to 15 tracks and list them below. I will also have a link to the list on Spotify where users can listen and lament and their own leisure. The link is here. Click it. BTW you need Spotify which you should already have.
- The Knife – “Heartbeats: One of the sexiest and most unorthodox love songs I can think of, this track is infectious and bittersweet in its lyrical presentation.
- Ben Kweller – “Lizzy”: Classic emotional rock by beloved Ben K., it’s just one of those songs that pretty much anyone can relate to, simply fill in the blank as far as the name goes.
- Bright Eyes – “Lua”: No V-Day list would be complete without the heartbreak of Connor Oberst. “Lua” pretty much sums it all up.
- Camera Obscura – “Dory Previn”: Named after the singer/songwriter who wrote mainly of the iron, pain, and honesty about her personal relationships and the whole idea in general. It’s beautiful.
- Cursive – “The Radiator Hums”: The entire Domestica album could probably be included on this list, the gritty depiction of a committed relationship is almost too honest. O’ foolish worker bee.
- Diamond Rings – “All Yr Songs” – A catchy and utterly sweet song and honest take on what it means to really love another.
- Elliott Smith – “Ballad of Big Nothing” – No sad Valentine’s day would be complete without the heart-shattering music of Elliott Smith.
- Fucked Up – “Queen of Hearts”: Hardcore love song.
- Jawbreaker – “Sluttering (May 4): Classic punk rock shit laced with plenty of contempt.
- Mountain Goats – “No Children” – The perfect song for anyone who is still a little angry over a failed relationship. Some of the most clever lyrics I’ve ever heard.
- The Prids – “Like Hearts” – New style indie, great lyrics, good tremelo, and catchy as fuck.
- The Rentals – “The Love I’m Searching For”: One of the best Rentals songs and a beautiful reminder as to the complicated nature of the whole damn thing.
- Morrissey – “Suedehead”: Everyone knows Morrissey/The Smiths helped come up with this whole idea of being sad, virtually any of their songs could be put in place of this one.
- Stars – “Your Ex-lover is Dead”: This one pretty much speaks for itself.
- Times New Viking – “Fuck Her Tears”: Indeed.
- The Vaccines – “Post Break-up Sex”: Also goes without saying.
- The Walkmen – “The Rat”: For those who receive calls from a past figure out of the blue.
- The Xx – “VCR” : Beautiful song. It feels as though you are eavesdropping on a conversation between two people madly in love.
- Yeah Yeah Yeahs – “Maps”: One of the most beautiful songs written in the last however many years. Karen O also has a good deal of anti-love songs as well.
- Spinto Band – “Oh Mandy”: Completely mush and utterly awesome.
